In this episode, I sit down with Shayma, who shares her story of an ectopic pregnancy that was missed during multiple ultrasounds.
Shayma had already experienced a miscarriage the year before and was cautiously hopeful when she found out she was pregnant again in March 2025. Early scans showed a gestational sac, a fetus, and even a heartbeat. Everything appeared to be progressing normally. Then two days later, she was rushed to the hospital with severe abdominal pain and diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy, something her medical team had not detected in any of the earlier appointments.
Shayma underwent emergency surgery to remove the pregnancy and her right fallopian tube. During the procedure, doctors also discovered endometriosis, which she had never been diagnosed with before.
She opens up about the confusion and frustration of asking her providers how this was missed and not getting a clear answer. She shares the emotional weight of losing a pregnancy she believed was healthy, the fear of trying again with one tube, and the self-blame she had to fight through in the weeks that followed.
We also talk about the importance of advocating for yourself in medical settings, why requesting bloodwork and HCG monitoring matters more than many women realize, and how relationships and friendships can shift after pregnancy loss.
Thank you for your bravery, Shayma!❤️
